Last Wednesday saw the four millionth .nl domain name registered (current active domains) according to SIDN, the body overseeing the .nl Internet domain name space.
SIDN says the .nl name is the fourth largest of the world's 250+ ccTLDs (Country Code Top Level Domain). Ahead of .nl is .de (Germany), .uk (United Kingdom) and .cn (China) respectively.
SIDN states that given the Netherlands population of 16 million, the country has the highest local domain name registration rate in the world. The Netherlands also has the highest broadband Internet access rate, with 38 people in every 100 having high speed access to the web.
Around 2800 new .nl domain names are registered daily. While approximately 1200 names lapse in registration each day, the net growth rate of 1600 a day should see the the five-millionth .nl domain name within a few years says Roelof Meijer, SIDN's CEO.
Within the Netherlands, .nl has a 72% share of the domain name market, followed by .com with 14%, then .eu with 8%. The highest concentration of .nl domain name registrants is in Amsterdam and the average .nl domain name is 13 characters in length.
Over the last year, .nl domain registrations have increased by almost 13%. The .nl domain extension will be twenty-five years old next year.
