Earlier today, the registry for the Netherlands domain extension .nl announced 2010 was the best year of growth for the extension since it came into being.
According to SIDN, the.nl registry operator, .nl domain names grew by 514,230 to 4,192,454 at the end of last year.
SIDN CEO Roelof Meijer said the rapid growth is continuing so far this year and .nl is now the third largest country code Top Level Domain (ccTLD) in the world.
The .nl name is about to celebrate another important milestone - 25 years of existence. In April 1986, the very first .nl domain name was registered to the Centre for Mathematics and Informatics and that domain - cwi.nl - is still in use by the Centre today.
The Foundation for Internet Domain Registration in the Netherlands (SIDN) was established in 1996 to oversee registry operations and today has more than 1900 registrars offering the .nl domain extension.
Unlike .au domain registration where registrants must be an Australian resident or a foreign company with a license to trade in Australia, non-Netherlands residents can register a .nl name - something that has been allowed since 2009.
However, for legal reasons SIDN's office address in the Netherlands is used as the residential address where legal notices can be served. In that situation, a copy of the legal document is sent to the registrant's email address and a physical copy sent to the administrative contact mailing address on file; wherever they may be located in the world. Neither the registrant or registrar is charged for SIDN's domicile address service.
