This year has seen the number of .info domain names registered grow by 1.3 million domains from last year, or 30%, to 6.8 million according to an annual report from registry operator Afilias.
Afilias says .info continues to maintain its position as the leading "new" top-level domain (TLD) ever launched. More than 360 registrars offer .info domain name registration, representing more than 90% of the global marketplace. As of October 2010, the .info growth rate appears to be touching close to 31%.
Approximately 44% of the new TLD registrations are now .info; over double the size double the size of the other new TLD's; including .aero, .biz, .coop, .museum, .name, or .pro.
The report states the extension is the seventh largest top-level domain, out of more than 270 total TLDs on the planet. Afilias says over 70% of .INFO registrations resolve to active web sites.
North America is the largest registration base of .info owners, at 58%. However, the USA lost some of its market share in 2010 to Europe, which now has 27%. The Asia Pacific region (including Australia) also gained share and is home to 12% of .info registrants.
While the .info name space was originally intended to be an environment for information exchange; its usage now covers many different areas, including ecommerce. Anyone, anywhere can register a .info domain name, without without restrictions such as those involved with country code TLD's like .com.au.
