Domain name marketplace SEDO has released its 2010/Q4 2010 Domain Market Study and generally speaking, it appears to have been a stellar period for domainers.
Sedo, an acronym for "Search Engine for Domain Offers," is one of the world's largest marketplaces and according to the company, at the end of last year hosted over 18 million names.
Sedo cracked the $100 million dollar sales mark for the very first time last year and since 2009, says it has increased annual sales by over $2.5 million.
The company says the most popular gTLD to be bought and sold remains .com domain names, making up 75% of its 2010 sales; followed by .net with 11% share. The .org extension accounted for 8%, .info 5% and .biz 1%.
Among country code Top Level Domains (ccTLD's), the .de extension (Germany) was the one traded most, followed by .eu (European Union) and .co.uk (United Kingdom).
For sellers, it was overall a very positive quarter, with .com transactions experiencing a massive 74% increase in average sale price. The average price of the .com extension was up $3,242 in Q4 2010 as compared with Q3. However, this high figure is largely due to a handful of major sales, including one for $13 million, boosting the overall average.
Median sales for .com during the last quarter of 2010 was $650, still a substantial increase on previous quarters.
Sedo says in its conclusion, "it is clear that the demand for domains is on the upswing and investors should take note of the increasing value of premium and global domains."
