With Australians even more likely to buy local online at the moment, as the old saying goes - it's an ill wind that blows nobody any good.
The impacts of COVID-19 on businesses across Australia have been devastating - however, Australians have still been shopping, just doing so online more frequently. This trend may continue even as restrictions are increasingly eased.
A survey commissioned by NBN Co and conducted by Venture Insights in April revealed seventy per cent of Australians surveyed state they now consciously support local businesses online, while 49 per cent of respondents’ households have increased online shopping during the COVID-19 crisis.
Furthermore, 70 per cent of those surveyed would like to do more to support local businesses but felt they had a limited online presence.
"...this research highlights a unique opportunity for local businesses to harness new levels of consumer goodwill and demand online," said NBN Chief Customer Officer - Business Paul Tyler. "An online presence can expose businesses to a world market, but the support of local consumers also offers an important opportunity."
There are still a large number of Australian businesses that are yet to establish a web site under their own domain name. It doesn't matter whether you're a one-person show working from your vehicle or have a bunch of store locations, a business is never too small to have a domain name. While platforms such as Facebook are great for reaching new customers and staying connected to existing clients; a social media presence should be seen as a useful tool, not the only one.
With its own domain and website, a business has more control over the content and features it can offer. It also provides portability and offers an option for the many Australians who still refuse to participate in social networks.
When considering a domain name as part of your move into the online world, bear in mind while there are many domain name extension choices these days, nothing says "Australian business" in the online world more than a .com.au name. The .au extension has been around for more than 30 years and is recognised and trusted by Australia consumers.
