Tens of thousands of Australian domain names were created last month according to recently published figures, showing interest in .au remains strong.
Registry monthly statistics for September released by auDA, the policy authority and industry self-regulatory body for the .au domain space, indicate 41,152 au names were created during the month - an average of 1,371 a day. For August, it was even higher - 47,544, or 1,533 a day.
At the end of September, 3,162,508 names in total were under management, 1.5% year-on-year growth. At the time of writing, auDA's site indicated 3,166,256 addresses were registered.
.AU has been around for 32 years, but it wasn't until 2007 that the one million domain mark was reached. The 2 million milestone was attained in 2011 and 3 million reached in 2015.
While au domains haven't seen the explosive growth of some other extensions in recent times, that is probably a good thing. Strict eligibility conditions have gone a long way towards ensuring the namespace isn't flooded with spammers and nefarious web sites. This has led to a high degree of credibility and trust among businesses and consumers, both locally and internationally.
The comparatively small number of Australian names compared to extensions such as .com also means there are still plenty of good domains available to register. However, with a new registry operator now in place with plans to boost marketing of the namespace, perhaps potential registrants shouldn't wait too long to stake their claim on their desired address.
Things have certainly changed in Australia with regard to the web over the years. It really wasn't all that long ago that having a web site was somewhat of a novelty; but today it's a necessity in order to reach customers and stay ahead of the competition. While social media accounts are an important part of promotion for a business, it still doesn't compare to having your own domain and web site. Social media plus your own web name make for a powerful combination of tools for informing and providing services to the Australians you want to reach.
The good news is to register an Australian domain is a simple process, so start your search today.
