According to the latest "Behind the Dot: State of the .au Domain" from AusRegistry, the .AU namespace saw an increase of domains under management of 3% to the end of March this year.
Much of the growth was thanks to the Point Piper of Australian domains; .COM.AU; which grew by 3.8%. While it's certainly a good result, it's lower than previous.
"Overall the annualised growth rate remains fairly low compared to 6 percent at the same time last year. Partly contributing to this reduction is the contraction of net.au for the sixth consecutive quarter," states the report.
The number of .NET.AU website addresses contracted by 3.1 per cent during the same period.
As the .AU space starts getting on in years, the proportion of domains that have reached the ripe old age six years or more has increased substantially. The report also points out Australia has a very high number of names held per capita - around one address for every 12.7 Australians.
