The number of .ORG domain names under management has grown by a net gain of 206,170 during the first half of 2013.
According to Public Interest Registry's (PIR) latest bi-annual domain name report, "The Dashboard," .ORG reached 10.3 million domains under management by June 30; an increase of 2 percent - compared to 3 percent growth for the first half of 2012. The 13.6 percent figure refers to new .ORG domains.
Over seven years, the number of .ORG domains has increased 86.8 percent from 5.5 million in 2007.
78 percent of .ORG domains have been classified by PIR as "active," meaning sites that return a valid response; are not redirects or have protected status, nor are referrals or parked domains.
The U.S. and European Union continue to be home to the greatest number of .ORG registrations; but Australia is also in the top 10 (ranked 5) at 4% - 357,880 names. India also entered the top ten for the first time during the first half of this year.
The gap between first and second spot among countries is substantial - the USA has 5,961,411 registrations and the next largest base is Germany; with 503,160 .ORG domains registered.
An interesting note was the continued perception that .ORG is a "closed" top-level name in just about every country PIR has surveyed. Many people still aren't aware than anyone, anywhere can register .org domains and do not need to have any sort of organisation status.
Renewal rates (three-plus years) for .ORG remains at 84.7 percent, which PIR states "positions .ORG well for strong and sustainable growth in the future in conjunction with the upcoming new top-level domains."
PIR assumed responsibility for operating and maintaining the .ORG registry in 2003.
