The registry for the domain extension assigned to Thailand celebrated its 25th year earlier this month.
The .TH country code Top Level Domain (ccTLD) was established in 1988 as an experimental network called Thai Computer Science Network (TCSnet) by the Asian Institute of Technology.
Those beginnings evolved into the THNIC (Thai Network Information Center) registry, which was formalised as a non-profit Foundation in 2007.
The .TH extension has some interesting registration criteria; for example, domain names can be no longer than 24 alpha-numeric characters, including hyphens. For .AU domain names, the upper limit is 63 characters.
For businesses to register a .CO.TH domain name, company documents must be provided that show the same name as the domain being requested. The restriction of a company only being able to register a single .TH domain has seen many Thai companies registering additional .COM names as well.
The only domain extension allowing for single-party multiple registrations is .IN.TH; which is designated for individuals (or organizations).
In order for foreign companies to register a .CO.TH, they must have a representative office established in Thailand. The exception to this rule is where a foreign company has a registered Thai trademark for the name it wishes to register.
It is perhaps the complexity of the .TH registry conditions that has seen relatively low numbers of related domain registrations; which are estimated to be around 181,000.
According to an article on the ICANN blog reflecting on the quarter century celebrations of .TH, THNIC was the first ccTLD in the region to sign their zone with DNSSEC (Domain Name System Security Extensions).
