Pingdom's 2012 Domain Name Statistics

Pingdom has released all sorts of interesting trivia with regard to domain names and the Internet generally last year.

According to the company:

• There were 246 million domain names registered across all top-level domains (TLDs) at the end of 2012
   
• 104.9 million country code top-level domain name registrations.
   
• 329  top level domains
   
• 100 million .com domain names at the end of last year; 14.1 million .net names and 9.7 million .org domain names.
  
• The highest price paid for a domain name during 2012 was $2.45 million for Investing.com

Some additional eye-popping statistics:

• 144 billion email messages sent per day worldwide in 2012 (68% of that figure being spam)
   
• The number of email users worldwide reach 2.2 billion
   
• There were 634 million websites by the end of last year; with 51 million added during 2012.
   
• The global online population increased to 2.4 billion
   
• 175 million tweets were sent a day during 2012
   
• There were 2.7 billion "likes" each day on FaceBook

Another interesting trivia tidbit is that even with broadband becoming more accessible and faster, the average web page became 4% slower to load during 2012. 

A likely reason for this is that as more bandwidth has become available, designers and developers have gobbled up any benefit by adding more bling and functionality to web sites. How much of that is actually useful is in the eyes of the beholder, but something that is certain is the World Wide Wait is still very much alive and well.

The notion that FaceBook users are a young bunch has also been dashed in the stats - it seems the average FaceBook users is 40.5 years old.
