A ruling from the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) has somewhat loosened up the country's domain name registration eligibility criteria.
According to a brief report sourced via Xinhua News Agency, China's .CN domain name administrator says that any Chinese citizen or organisation "bearing civil responsibilities" can now apply to register a domain name under the country's extension.
Registration of a name will still be accompanied by strict guidelines. For example, sites hosted under a .CN domain name must not be perceived to be containing anything that may disrupt state integrity, harm national honor and national interests; disrupt the national solidarity; or "spread rumors, disturb public order or disrupt social stability".
Earlier reports from Xinhua state China had 513 million Internet users by the end of 2011. The 38.3 percent of Chinese people using the Internet represents a larger number than the US, UK, Canada and Australia's population combined. 23 percent of the world's total Internet users live in China.
Over 194 million Chinese people participated in online shopping in 2011, up 20.8 percent from 2010. China's Internet economy jumped 72.7 percent year-on-year to 71.6 billion yuan (approximately 11.4 billion Australian dollars) in the third quarter of 2011.
Traditionally, China's citizens have used micro-blogging services to establish their own web presence. As of the end of November 2011, the number of microblog users exceeded 300 million says Xinhua.
China Internet Network Information Center was founded as a non-profit organization in June 1997. Day-to-day business is controlled via the Ministry of Information Industry (MII) and it is administratively operated by Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).
