.ORG, The Public Interest Registry, recently released its bi-annual domain name report, "The Dashboard," which shows the .org domain space grew by an impressive 10.1% compared to the same time last year.
Domain names ending in .org grew by 4% in the first 6 months this year and a total over 9.2 million .org names were registered by the end of June 2011, a net gain of over 350,000 compared to the first half of 2010. .ORG remains the Internet's third largest "generic" top-level domain (gTLD).
Domains Under Management (DUM) in the .org space have increased from 3.9 million in 2005 to 9.2 million in 2011 - a jump of 136 percent.
The blended rate of renewal (the average of one, two and three or more years registration renewal) was 75.8 percent in the first half of this year, an increase of 1 percent from the previous half.
North America remained the dominant market for .org domain name registration this year to June, followed by Europe; Asia, Australia, and the Pacific; Latin America and the Caribbean; and Africa. In the first half of 2011, Australia, Asia and the Pacific account for 11% of registrations.
The report also acknowledges the appointment of Brian Cute to the position of CEO of PIR the first half of this year. Mr. Cute has over 12 years experience in telecommunications and Internet industries, and has led initiatives on wait-list service, private domain registrations, the elimination of Bulk WHOIS, and a number of other ICANN policy matters.
Public Interest Registry (PIR) is tasked with the oversight of .ORG registry operations and maintaining the authoritative database of all associated domain names.
