Two-Thirds Of Australians More Likely To Trust .AU Websites

The latest Behind the Dot – State of the .au Domain features results from the annual .au survey report; which indicate awareness of and trust in .au domains remains strong.

The survey attracted responses from more than 3,000 Australians.

Among the findings, two thirds of .au domain holding respondents said they chose to register .au names as the extension is the most popular in Australia and/or best represents Australian organisations. A similar percentage of respondents said they were more likely to trust a .au website.

However, the proportion of respondents holding .au domain names has decreased; prompting AusRegistry, authors of the report, to recommend that this be further investigated.

The survey also found awareness of new generic Top-Level Domains (new gTLDs) remains low.

The 2015 survey ran over approximately two weeks in late May through to to early June 2015.

Other statistics from the report not related to the survey:

• 28,531 domains were added to the .au registry total in the April to June quarter, an average of 314 a day.
• 89% of the 148,957 new registrations in Q1 were .com.au domains
• While the number of new .com.au domains created remained steady, .net.au creates have dropped during the past year. 
• At the end of the quarter, the total number of .au domain names under management reached 2,972,751. The report also highlights the 3 million domains mark was reached on July 24.
• There was an overall reduction in the growth rate; from 6% to 5%; but the report states this is in line with trends in other country code Top-Level Domains (ccTLDs).
• The overall renewal rate for .au remained steady during the quarter at 66%.
