If I am not eligible for a com.au or .net.au domain name, what choices do I have?

If you are not eligible to register a .com.au or .net.au domain name there may be another Australian domain name extension to search for that is more appropriate for your organisation.

For example, org.au or .asn.au domain name registration is open to Australian incorporated associations, political parties, trade unions, sporting or special interest clubs. You will need to provide supporting evidence (such as incorporation or registration details) of your organisation in order to register one these names.

The id.au extension can be registered by any Australian citizen or resident; however, please note that id.au website addresses cannot be used in connection with commercial ventures - it is for personal/hobby use only.

Another option is to register a "global" (generic) domain name (also known as a gTLD) such as those ending  in .com, .net, .org, .info, or .biz as these domain name extensions are not subject to eligibility criteria. These website addresses are available for registration to any individual or organisation anywhere in the world. Also, you do not have to host your website overseas to register a name with one of these extensions - you can still host your website in Australia.

After .com.au, the .com extension is most sought after for businesses. However, as competition for .com names is so high, if you have a .com website address in mind, it's best to register it as soon as possible.

Tens of thousands of .com names are registered every day, many of them to "domainers"; people who have no intention of using the name, but to resell it at a much higher price than what registration costs!
